The eCussionist – Matt Vorzimer

Producer, Percussionist, Teacher

Matt Vorzimer began playing drums at the young age of 7, after building a drum set

from spare parts in his family’s garage. Matt’s father, a drummer and singer for Bo

Diddly, provided much of Matt’s initial inspiration, singing, playing, and taking Matt to

concerts. Early on, Matt found that jazz offered the kind of musical freedom he had

been looking for, and his father imparted that it would take a tremendous amount of

dedication and passion.

Matt and his band ‘STU’ had their first big gig at Boulder, Colorado’s famous Fox

Theater when he was 13. Matt spent the majority of his teen years moonlighting as

a high school student by day and teen musician at night, opening for acts like Victor

Wooten and Soulive. After graduating from high school, Matt made his lifelong

dream come true and moved to New York City. Since arriving in New York, under the

tutelage of his mentor Billy Hart, he has worked professionally as a drummer and

musical director for numerous up and coming R & B, rock, and jazz artists including

Chris Rob, Reggie Workman, Frank Lacy, Logan Richardson, The Cotton Club All Stars,

John Gordon, Bobby Yang, and The Betty Carter All Stars.

Matt’s passion for jazz inspired his foray into what he calls “eCussion”. His idea

was to bring jazz to a contemporary audience through the use of traditional jazz

improvisation on the drum set combined with samples from contemporary music, but

all played in real-time, percussively. Recently

Matt secured a slot in New York City’s

prestigious Music Under New York program,

and played special events for the likes of NBC

and Samsung. At the urging of his fans, he has

also self-released three albums, “Soundtrack

For A Short Film,” “Vortex: Chronicles From

the Underground,” and “Big Nose Strikes

Again,” which infuses Detroit/Chicago and

Contemporary Techno. These projects

showcase his skills as a drummer, producer

and most importantly as an “eCussionist”.

Gabriel Royal

Cellist, Composer, Teacher

There is much to hear from this all around musician. Best known for his NYC

subway concerts, Gabriel Royal was even acknowledged by the Huffington

Post as “NYC’s Best Subway Musician.” From artists like Green Lantern, Mandy

Lee, Cisco Adler, and YelaWolf, Gabriel Royal has proven his diversity and indepth

knowledge of music. His writing style employs soul, jazz, and classical

sensibilities rarely heard in an almost seamless marriage of Cello and Voice.

He is a renowned teacher and studio musician. While his classical background

may seem intimidating to many modern songwriters this preconception is

quickly defused only a few moments after meeting him. His jovial smile and

overwhelming sense of humor relax the mood and comfort the most hesitant

listener. He does not disappoint. Beautiful music and hearty laughter await the

audience at any gig he plays. Give a listen!

FOLKFOOT- Michael Parrish and Bill Kelly

FOLKFOOT- Michael Parrish and Bill Kelly

Hey everyone! Check out one of our artists Folkfoot! Folkfoot consists of Michael Parrish and Bill Kelly.  They have been playing NYC Kids Fest every year! Bill Kelly, who is one half of Folkfoot was able to answer some questions for us! Let’s check them out!

How did you get started playing music?

I started singing in semi-pro theater when I was 10 years old, and then in a boys choir at around 12, both at the suggestion of my mother.

How long have you been playing?

I started playing the guitar when I was 12, so I’ve been playing for (has it really been?) 40 + years.

What type of music do you play?

The good kind. The kind with feeling. The kind that allows for all the feelings.

What is your favorite part about performing for children?

I heard a story that Lionel Richie would test his new songs on children. Because they have no preconceived notions or conditions as to what should or shouldn’t be, or what’s cool or not, so their reaction is honest and heart based.
I love how excited they get when they like something and start pogo-ing . And I like when their hands go over their ears.

Are you excited about playing NYC Kids Fest?

Folkfoot is a great act and Michael Parrish is a gifted songwriter and musician who is always exciting to play with. I’ve been a part of NYC Kids Fest every year both on and off stage. It’s a fantastic family and community fair that has a great range of entertainment for the people. And that spot by the waterfall in Morningside Park is awfully pretty on a Summer day.
